"Unit of Measure" - 1998

"Unit of Measure" presents a site where the cultural,
technological, physical and emotional collide. It
is a direct response to my ambivalence about my
(our) dependence and trust (or faith) in the
technological in the face of the vulnerability of the
physical; namely our bodies. This work is a direct
response to the various degrees of presence and
(in)visibility of technology in our culture. It is an
attempt at a non-verbal discourse on the
problematics and cultural assumptions of
technological innovation: the degree to which
we use it to measure our success or failure; the
crisis of representation it presents; the inappropriate
comparative models it poses; and, despite all of
this, the insistence on the visceral in the face of
physical and genetic removal, substitution and
adaptation.
