The New Media Collaborative is a project initiated by
the Hartford Art School Media Arts Department and the
Hartt School Composition Department under the direction of Professors Gene Gort and Ken Steen. It is an ongoing project that links students across disciplines using this website as 1) a portal for sharing media files with the intent of fostering collaboration for media projects and 2) a repository for documentation of student work.

The concept of the project was inspired by Gort and Steen's collaboration, Reliquary of Labor, a parallel media project begun in 2005 commissioned by the New Britain Museum of American Art. Their project and its relationship to the NMC is documented in a paper "Parallel Media: Convergence in the Classroom" presented at the Second International Conference on the Arts in Society, Kassel, Germany 2007. It was presented again at the "New Creativity" symposium at
Connecticut College, New London Connecticut in
February, 2008. The paper was published in THE INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF THE ARTS IN SOCIETY in 2008.
