Robert Black commissioned Philip Glass to compose a work for solo Double Bass for him in 2018. The Not Doings of an Insomniac is the work he composed. It is in Partita form in seven movements, each introduced with a spoken word reading by Robert of poets', musicians', artists', and writers' works: Lou Reed, Laurie Anderson, Yoko Ono, David Byrne, Leonard Cohen, Patti Smith, and Arthur Russell. In 2022, Robert commissioned me to produce interstitial video shorts to accompany the spoken word texts and embellish the narratives of each. In June of 2022, we premiered this version for First Fridays with Robert Black, a live streaming series for Bang On a Can Live Online. The video here is a documentation of that live performance.
